The short answer

The best electric zero-turn for most homeowners is the EGO Power+ Z6 52-inch: a fabricated steel deck, an independent brushless motor for every blade, and a rating of up to 4 acres per charge with its six 12Ah batteries. If you want joystick steering and a wider deck, the RYOBI 80V 54-inch is also rated for up to 4 acres. For 1 to 2 acres, the EGO Z6 42-inch is the easier fit, and the Greenworks 60V 42-inch CrossoverZ is the value pick.

How we picked

We compared manufacturer specifications, owner reviews and published reviews. We focused on what decides whether an electric zero-turn can actually replace gas on your property: rated acres per charge, deck construction, number of motors, slope rating, charging time and how widely the brand is serviced. We did not include dealer-only machines that are not sold on Amazon.

1. EGO Power+ Z6 52-inch — Best overall

The 52-inch Z6 is the electric zero-turn that most convincingly does a gas mower’s job. EGO’s current 52-inch kit ships with six 56V 12.0Ah ARC Lithium batteries and a 1600W charger that charges all six at once in about 4 hours, and EGO rates it for up to 4 acres per charge. The deck is 10-gauge fabricated steel, which resists flexing and dents better than stamped decks, and each blade has its own brushless motor, so blade speed holds up when the grass gets thick.

You get variable travel speed from 4 to 8 mph, 10 cutting positions from 1.5 to 4.5 inches, IPX4 weather resistance and 3-in-1 capability (mulch, bag or side discharge). EGO rates slope performance at up to 15 degrees under ideal conditions.

Good to know: the bagger (ABK5200) and mulching blades are sold separately. EGO’s Amazon listings come in more than one battery configuration, so confirm what is included before you buy. Warranty terms differ between EGO’s spec sheet and FAQ, so check them at purchase.

Choose it if: you have 2 to 4 mostly flat acres and want the closest thing to a gas zero-turn without gas.

2. RYOBI 80V HP 54-inch — Best big deck

RYOBI’s flagship electric zero-turn pairs a 54-inch deck with five brushless motors that RYOBI compares to a 42 HP gas engine. It ships with three 80V 10Ah batteries and four 40V 12Ah batteries, and RYOBI rates it for up to 4 acres per charge. The Hyper Charger refills the pack in about 5 hours.

The standout feature is iDrive joystick steering. Many first-time zero-turn owners find a single joystick easier to learn than lap bars. You also get the CROSS CUT multi-blade system, 12 cutting heights from 1.5 to 4.5 inches, seat suspension, LED headlights, USB ports, an LCD readout of cut and drive speed, and an app that shows charge status. RYOBI lists more than 300 service centers plus mobile service in select areas.

Good to know: RYOBI does not publish a slope rating on the product page. Owner reports suggest real-world coverage is often lower than the 4-acre rating, especially in heavy grass.

Choose it if: you want the widest electric deck in this group and prefer a joystick.

3. EGO Power+ Z6 42-inch (ZT4204L) — Best for 1 to 2 acres

The 42-inch Z6 uses the same platform as the 52-inch, scaled down. The ZT4204L kit comes with four 56V 10.0Ah batteries, and EGO rates it for about 2 acres per charge. The narrower deck fits through more gates, stores in a standard garage bay more easily and handles tight landscaping, trees and fence lines better.

EGO also sells a ZT4214L version of the 42-inch with six 6.0Ah batteries and an 880W charger. See that configuration on Amazon.

Good to know: the batteries are the same 56V packs that run EGO’s handheld tools, which helps if you already own EGO trimmers or blowers. Battery-sharing works both ways, though: borrow a pack for the blower and you lose mowing range.

Choose it if: you mow 1 to 2 acres with lots of obstacles.

4. RYOBI 80V HP 42-inch — Best mid-size joystick mower

The 42-inch RYOBI keeps the iDrive joystick, CROSS CUT blades, LCD and app, and uses four brushless motors that RYOBI compares to a 31 HP gas engine. It ships with two 80V 10Ah and two 40V 12Ah batteries, is rated for up to 3 acres per charge and recharges in about 2.5 hours, which is the fastest turnaround in this group.

Good to know: it is compatible with RYOBI’s Bagger Boost accessory, sold separately. As with the 54-inch, RYOBI does not list a slope rating.

Choose it if: you have 1 to 3 acres and want a joystick mower that is back in action the same afternoon.

5. Greenworks 60V 42-inch CrossoverZ — Best value

The CrossoverZ is often one of the least expensive ways into an electric zero-turn. The common kit includes six 60V 8.0Ah batteries and three dual-port turbo chargers. Greenworks rates it for up to 2.5 acres per charge, a top speed of 8 mph and slopes up to 15 degrees. Cutting height runs from 1.5 to 4.5 inches across 7 positions, and a rear hitch is rated to tow 350 lbs.

Good to know: the 42-inch deck is 13-gauge stamped steel rather than fabricated, and it is a side-discharge deck out of the box. Greenworks also sells kits with fewer batteries, which reduce range, so check the battery count.

Choose it if: you have about 1 to 2 flat acres and want electric at the lowest cost.

How to size an electric zero-turn

Lawn size Deck Rated coverage to look for Good fits
Under 1 acre 42″ 2+ acres (gives headroom) Greenworks CrossoverZ, EGO Z6 42″
1–2 acres 42″ 2.5–3 acres EGO Z6 42″, RYOBI 42″
2–3 acres 52–54″ 4 acres EGO Z6 52″, RYOBI 54″
3–4 acres 52–54″ 4 acres plus spare batteries EGO Z6 52″ or consider gas
4+ acres 54″+ Beyond current residential ratings Gas zero-turn

Pick a mower rated for noticeably more acreage than you actually mow. Rated figures assume dry, flat, regularly cut grass. Hills, bagging, thick spring growth and battery aging all eat into range.

Buying checklist

  • Battery kit: the same mower is often sold with different battery counts and capacities. Range depends on total watt-hours, not the mower name.
  • Charge time: if you mow in one session, a 2.5-hour recharge matters less than range. If you split mowing over a day, it matters a lot.
  • Deck build: fabricated steel lasts longer than stamped, especially if you hit roots and stumps.
  • Slope rating: 15 degrees is a typical ceiling for residential electric zero-turns. Steeper ground needs a different machine.
  • Storage and gates: measure. Overall width runs several inches more than the deck size.
  • Service: check where the nearest authorized repair center is before you buy.
  • Accessories: baggers, mulch kits and spare batteries are usually extra.

Electric or gas zero-turn?

Go electric if your lawn is mostly flat, under about 3 to 4 acres, and you want low noise and almost no engine maintenance. Go gas if you mow more than 4 acres, deal with regular steep slopes or wet, heavy grass, or need to run all day without a recharge. On any zero-turn, mow up and down slopes rather than across, slow down on wet grass and keep away from drop-offs and ditch banks.

FAQ

Are electric zero-turn mowers worth it?

For flat or gently rolling lawns under about 3 to 4 acres, usually yes. You skip oil changes, fuel, spark plugs and belts, and they run much quieter. Gas still wins on very large properties, steep ground and thick, wet grass.

How many acres can an electric zero-turn mow on one charge?

Manufacturer ratings for current residential models run from about 2.5 acres (Greenworks 60V 42-inch) to about 4 acres (EGO Z6 52-inch with six 12Ah batteries and RYOBI 80V 54-inch). Expect less in tall, wet grass, on hills or when bagging.

Can electric zero-turns mow hills?

Only moderate slopes. EGO rates its 52-inch Z6 for up to 15 degrees under ideal conditions and Greenworks lists 15 degrees for its 42-inch CrossoverZ. Moisture, side-hilling and speed all reduce traction, so mow up and down slopes, not across.

How long does it take to recharge an electric zero-turn?

It depends on the charger. RYOBI quotes about 2.5 hours for its 42-inch kit and about 5 hours for the 54-inch; EGO quotes roughly 4 hours to charge six batteries on its 1600W charger.

Do electric zero-turn mowers need maintenance?

Much less than gas. Keep blades sharp, clean the deck, check tire pressure and store batteries per the manufacturer’s instructions. There is no engine oil, air filter or fuel system to service.
